When you book an overseas holiday the last thing you can afford is getting sick or be required to recover from anything other than a great adventure. We've taken a few moments to find out a little more about a few common, yet avoidable traveling blues.
Deep Vein Thrombosis
A DVT is a blood clot that forms deep inside the veins of the body, usually the legs. It may travel around the body and cause damage to vital organs, such as the lungs. Cabin-related risk factors include immobilisation, cramped position, insufficient fluid intake, low humidity and hypoxia.
Mostly DVT can be prevented with:
- Regular calf exercises,
- Moving around the cabin every 2 hours,
- Adequate fluid intake,
- Avoidance of diuretics including that caused by too much alcohol or caffeine.
Higher risk travellers such as those with a past history of thrombosis may benefit from the use of supportive stockings (such as Jobst travel socks) and self injectable anti-thrombotic agents, or an antiplatelet agent such as aspirin. Talk with your travel doctor to determine which course of action is the most appropriate for your situation.
Jetlag is what we feel when our normal body rhythms are out of synchrony with the environment. It is worse when we travel long distances, especially felt when you travel east. Symptoms include fatigue, impaired vision, headache, sleep disturbance, hunger at inappropriate times, gastrointestinal upset, urinary disturbance and poor mental and physical performance.
There are a number of things that can help minimise jet lag:
- Try breaking your flight into sections not exceeding 4 hours time zone change.
- If possible stay on "home time" for the entire journey adopting local time for eating and sleeping on arrival.
- Arrive 7 days ahead of the day on which you need to be reasonably competent.
Exposure to bright lights around travel times, regular exercise across travel times, maintaining a high protein diet, and appropriate use of sleeping tables may assist in minimising symptoms.
Be careful what you eat, choose the cleanest places possible and try to find out what you are eating before you eat it. It may be a good idea to avoid seafood.

- Eat fruits that you can peel.
- Wash your hands thoroughly before eating.
- Ask for no ice in your drinks.
