Every now and again, especially at this time of the year when you want to set the tone for the New Year, you need a little help.

Supplements are a very effective way to help you get yourself going when you may require a little assistance.

Following are three supplements that are now available that may be just what you need to give you a helping hand.

Weight loss

Are you trying to manage your weight?

There is plenty of good evidence to support very low calorie diets, such as Iso-whey, but you may not be aware that Alginate, an ingredient in Iso-Whey could have long-term benefits on cardiovascular health and in appetite regulation. Also, whey protein, also found in Iso-Whey, when combined with essential amino acids, may promote a reduction in fat and increase muscle building in older, obese people.

Muscles

Magnesium is a mineral essential for the normal functioning of all our muscles, including the heart. Deficiencies in magnesium can lead to cardiovascular disease such as heart attacks, heart failure and hypertension as well insomnia, irritability, muscular weakness, nausea, vomiting, vertigo, nervousness and increased triglyceride levels. A multicentre, multinational, study in 2003 tested the use of magnesium in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). Subjects were either given a magnesium citrate supplement or a placebo and their exercise tolerance was measured. After six months, there was a significant improvement in exercise tolerance, with less exercise-induced chest pain and better quality of life reported by the magnesium citrate group. Another study suggested magnesium may also help improve insulin sensitivity and metabolic control in type 2 diabetic patients with decreased serum magnesium levels.

Energy Production

Ubiquinol is a form of Coenzyme Q10, also known as ubiquinone and is found in the mitochondria which are responsible for energy production in our cells. An increasing body of research is demonstrating that supplementation with Coenzyme Q10 can be beneficial in the treatment of a number of health problems, particularly cardiac conditions and diseases. Deficiency primarily affects the heart and may lead to heart failure. One study showed in healthy Olympic athletes that daily supplementation of 300 mg Ubiquinol for six weeks significantly enhanced physical performance compared to athletes with the same training but with no supplementation.
